How Instant Redemption Feature Works in Liquid Mutual Funds

How instant redemption feature works in liquid mutual funds is simpler than it sounds: eligible investors can redeem the lower of ₹50,000 or 90% of their holding in a scheme each day, and the money reaches their bank account within minutes through IMPS. The catch is a slightly lower NAV and a set of eligibility rules, which I’ve laid out below.

How Instant Redemption Feature Works in Liquid Mutual Funds

What the Facility Is

SEBI permits it, but fund houses choose whether to offer it.

  • SEBI allowed an Instant Access Facility in liquid schemes in 2017, in a circular reported on 4 May of that year
  • Before that, a couple of fund houses offered up to ₹2 lakh round the clock, and SEBI cut the limit to ₹50,000
  • It isn’t compulsory, so not every liquid fund provides it
  • The fund house must meet the liquidity from the scheme’s own funds, according to the circular

Who Can Use It

The rules are narrow.

  • Resident individuals only, so NRIs and foreign citizens can’t use it
  • Requests must be made online, through the fund house’s website or app, or through a platform that has tied up with it
  • One guide says it’s available only on the growth plan, and another says only for non-demat holdings
  • The bank account on record receives the money, usually by IMPS

The Limit

It’s a daily cap, not a total ceiling.

  • You can redeem ₹50,000 or 90% of the latest value of your investment in the scheme, whichever is lower
  • It applies per day, per scheme and per investor, and one guide says across folios under one PAN
  • With a ₹40,000 holding, the cap is ₹36,000, and with ₹2 lakh it’s ₹50,000
  • You can redeem more than that in a day, but not under the instant facility, and the rest follows the standard timeline

How a Request Works

The steps take a minute or two.

  • Log in to the fund house’s app or a platform that supports it
  • Choose “Instant Redemption” as the redemption mode, within the limit
  • The fund house sends the money by IMPS to your registered bank account, often within seconds or minutes
  • The units are then cancelled in your folio at the applicable NAV, as the circular provides

The NAV Catch

Instant access doesn’t come free of cost, though the cost is small.

  • A request received by 3 pm gets the lower of the previous calendar day’s NAV and that day’s NAV
  • A request received after 3 pm gets the lower of that day’s NAV and the next calendar day’s NAV
  • Liquid fund NAVs move every calendar day, so you give up a day of accrual
  • At an assumed yield of about 6.5% a year, one day’s accrual on ₹50,000 is roughly ₹9. That’s my illustration, not a quoted rate
  • Standard redemption uses a different NAV rule, so compare if the timing doesn’t matter

Weekends and Holidays

This is the feature’s main selling point.

  • Because IMPS runs round the clock, instant redemption can credit money on weekends and holidays, according to one guide
  • Standard redemptions wait for the next working day
  • If you need cash on a Sunday, the instant facility is the only liquid-fund route
  • Check that your platform actually supports weekend requests before relying on it

Exit Load

Liquid funds have a short-term charge that applies here too.

  • SEBI requires a graded exit load for redemptions within seven days of investment, quoted at 0.0070% on day one and tapering to nil from day seven
  • It’s small, but it’s there if you invest and withdraw quickly
  • Hold for a week and the load is gone

Which Funds Offer It

Support varies by fund house, so check your scheme.

  • One guide says SBI Liquid Fund, HDFC Liquid Fund, Kotak Liquid Scheme and ICICI Prudential Liquid Fund all document instant access
  • An older report listed Aditya Birla Sun Life, Nippon, Axis, DSP, Sundaram and PGIM India among those offering it
  • Some sources say overnight funds can offer it as well, while the original circular reported only liquid schemes, so confirm with the fund house
  • Your own platform may offer it for some schemes and not others

When It Doesn’t Help

The facility has limits.

  • Amounts above ₹50,000 or 90% follow the standard T+1 timeline
  • Non-resident investors can’t use it
  • If your bank or IMPS is down, the credit can be delayed
  • It isn’t a substitute for an emergency fund if you need large sums at once

Tips for Using It Well

A few habits help.

  • Keep a small buffer in a liquid fund that supports the facility
  • Check the scheme’s instant access page before investing
  • Remember that gains are taxed on redemption, so frequent use creates records to track
  • Test it with a small amount before you need it
